How is GPA Calculated?

1

Each Grade Has a Point Value

Every letter grade is converted to a number value:

A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, B- = 2.7,
C+ = 2.3, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0
2

Multiply Grade Points by Credit Hours

For each course, multiply the grade points by the number of credit hours.

Math (3 credits) with a B grade (3.0):
3.0 × 3 = 9.0 grade points
3

Add Up All Grade Points

Add together all the grade points from all your courses.

Math: 9.0 points + Science: 8.0 points + English: 12.0 points
9.0 + 8.0 + 12.0 = 29.0 total grade points
4

Add Up All Credit Hours

Add together all the credit hours from all your courses.

Math: 3 credits + Science: 2 credits + English: 4 credits
3 + 2 + 4 = 9 total credit hours
5

Divide Total Points by Total Credits

Divide the total grade points by the total credit hours to get your GPA.

Total grade points: 29.0 ÷ Total credit hours: 9
29.0 ÷ 9 = 3.22 GPA
6

Understand Your GPA

Your GPA tells you your average grade across all courses:

4.0 = Straight A's
3.0 = B average
2.0 = C average
Below 2.0 = Needs improvement
